Dias takes out controversial second in BOA Super 8 Jiu Jitsu comp
Professor William Dias was one of the eight Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black belts selected for the BOA Super 8 Jiu Jitsu comp in Melbourne over the weekend; a unique high profile tournament that saw some of the greats of BJJ converge on the same stage fighting three times in the one night eliminator. The championship winner took home $5000 cash as well as the beautiful BOA title belt.
BOA consisted of Kit Dale (Infinity South Yarra), Michael Tohme (Australian Elite Team), Lachlan Giles (Renegade MMA), Marcos Souza (Bonsai Jiu-Jitsu) , Thiago Braga (Legacy BJJ), Lee Ting (Immersion Mixed Martial Arts), Bruno Alves (Gracie Barra Crows Nest) and William Dias (Goioere BJJ / Champions Gym)
In the first bout William Dias beat Lachlan Giles by points decision while in the second match Dias beat Michael Tohme by armbar taking him to the final where he took on fellow countryman Brazilian Bruno Alves. The final was fast and furious from the beginning with Alves vs Dias fighting back and forth, Alves was ahead 3-2 until Dias landed a well timed sweep and was awarded the two points on the scoreboard at the full time siren putting Dias ahead 4-3 in what many thought was a sure victory. After a controversial few minutes following a post match judges’ review it was decided that the sweep would not be awarded in favour to Dias, deducting the two points and costing him the championship despite his efforts.
Despite the result William Dias and coach / father Paulo ‘Goioere’ Dias were humble in defeat remaining quiet and without any form of appeal with the announcement of the decision. Boa Super 8 was live streamed internationally via www.liveboxing.com.au and was the first of it’s kind presented by Sy Nadji who also promotes Rebellion Muay Thai events. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was brought to a whole new level with the concept!
